The format

How a backyard ultra works

01

Run a loop

Every hour on the hour, starting at 9:00 AM, everyone runs one 4.167-mile loop.

02

Beat the clock

Finish inside 60 minutes and use what's left to rest, refuel and get ready for the next bell.

03

Keep going

Miss the hour or skip a start and you're out. The last runner to complete a loop wins.

FAQ

Questions

Why 4.167 miles?

4.167 miles × 24 loops = 100 miles. Run a full day and you've run a hundred.

Do I need to be an ultrarunner?

No. Complete one loop and you earn a finisher item. Many runners set a personal goal of 1, 3, or 6 loops (marathon distance is about 6.3 loops) and have a great day.

When is the shirt deadline?

Wednesday, July 21, 2027, which is 45 days before race day. Register by then to guarantee a 2027 runner shirt.

Can my crew help me?

Yes, at the start/finish area only. Crews bring their own equipment. Pacers are not allowed on course.

Can I get a refund or defer to next year?

No. This is a charity event, so there are no refunds or deferrals.

Can friends and family come watch?

Absolutely. Spectators are welcome at the start/finish and the Backyard Hangout spectator zone. If you can't make it, watch the YouTube livestream.

Why Family Promise

Every dollar raised through Laps For Love, from registration fees, from donations, from everything, goes to Family Promise of Greater Wichita. In 2026 we raised over $20,000 for their mission.

Family Promise serves families with children who are experiencing homelessness and housing insecurity right here in our city. Their goal, and I say this as a board member, is to get family homelessness in Wichita to functional zero. Not reduced. Zero.

Here's what I've come to understand about what they actually do. The story behind every person who finishes a backyard ultra is their crew. Nobody can run the race for them. But the crew keeps them safe, gives them what they need, and sends them back out.

Family Promise is that crew for the families they serve.

They walk with them. They give them resources in a deep, relational way. They listen. They support. They empower. These families are in their own endurance race, and Family Promise is the best crew they could ask for.

I joined this board because I care about children, about real estate, and about making Wichita stronger through community. Family Promise is a quiet cornerstone of this city doing work most people don't see. I want more people to see it.

Because 2,000 children in the Greater Wichita area don't have a permanent home tonight. And because an organization doing something about that deserves every arrow in my quiver pointed in their direction.
